Bold Spots, Endless Curiositiy
Petricola Catfish are small in size but big on personality. With their bold spotted patterns and quick, darting movements, they bring constant energy to the lower levels of the tank. They’re often the first to explore new spaces and the last to settle in for the night, making them a fun and engaging presence from the start.
Native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika, Petricola thrive in environments filled with crevices, tunnels, and shaded corners. They spend their days weaving through rockwork, slipping in and out of tight spaces, and popping out just long enough to remind you they’re there. Keeping them in groups brings out their confidence and encourages natural social behavior.
What makes Petricola Catfish especially rewarding is how they add motion and texture without overwhelming the scene. They complement a tank rather than dominate it, filling in the gaps and bringing the aquascape to life. In a well-designed setup, they create a sense of constant discovery, there’s always something happening if you take a moment to look.

Life Among the Roots
Petricola tanks benefit from plants that add texture without blocking access to rockwork. Submerged plants like Bolbitis or smaller Cryptocoryne varieties can be tucked into corners and gaps, softening hard edges while leaving caves clear. Above the surface, emerged plants such as pothos, spider plants, or lucky bamboo thrive with their roots in the water, helping maintain water quality and adding a natural sense of depth to the environment.
Did You Know?
Petricola are built for life among the rocks. Their slim bodies and calm demeanor let them slip effortlessly into narrow spaces where they live, breed, and raise their young.
