Shell Dwellers – Caudos

Neolamprologus caudopunctatus are subtle showstoppers from Lake Tanganyika, known for their sleek bodies, shimmering spots, and surprisingly expressive behavior. They may not demand attention at first glance, but spend a little time watching them and you’ll quickly see why they’re so special. These fish are curious, observant, and deeply aware of their surroundings, making them a joy to keep and observe.

Often found hovering near rocks and sandy patches, caudopunctatus strike a balance between open swimming and structure. They’re social without being chaotic, confident without being aggressive, and their interactions feel thoughtful rather than reactive. When kept in a well-designed tank, they settle in beautifully, forming natural pair bonds and adding steady, engaging movement to the aquascape.

Origin – Lake Tanganyika
Temperament – Semi-Aggressive
Tank Size – 30 gallons or more
Aquascape – Sand with moderate rockwork
Diet – Omnivore
Breeding – Cave Spawners
Temperature – 75-80°
Water Quality (ph) – 8.0 – 9.0
Nitrates – ≤ 40ppm

Though caudopunctatus environments are defined by sand and rock, select plants can still be incorporated with purpose. Submerged options like Vallisneria or Bolbitis thrive when placed along the tank’s perimeter or anchored to rockwork, while emerged plants such as monstera, pothos, philodendron, or spider plants grow with their roots suspended in the water. Together, these plants support water quality, add gentle structure, and enhance the ecosystem without interfering with natural behavior.

Caudopunctatus are calm, open-water rock dwellers that prefer peaceful coexistence over constant conflict, a rarity among cichlids.
